چکیده

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, is well documented as a seasonal disease of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Water temperatures influence the course of the infection both within the fish and the invertebrate host, the recovery of fish from the disease being accelerated with decreasing water temperatures. During this study, groups of rainbow trout were held at a constant temperature (18°C) for a sustained period of time following initial exposure to T. bryosalmonae. While the majority of these fish had recovered from the clinical disease after 9 mo, 10% remained infected, showing clinical signs of disease. A histological study revealed that the majority exhibited very high parasite loads and unusually severe symptoms of PKD. This demonstrates that while most rainbow trout can recover from PKD independent of water temperature, there exists a sub-population that cannot.

Induction of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss via the bryozoan Fredericella sultana infected with Tetracapsula bryosalmonae.

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is a serious infection of wild and farmed salmonids, affecting mainly the kidney and spleen but becoming systemic in most susceptible fish hosts. This report deals with the transmission of Tetracapsula bryosalmonae Canning, Curry, Feist, Longshaw & Okamura 1999 from naturally infected bryozoans Fredericella sultana Blumenbach 1779 to naive rainbow trout Oncorh...

Proliferative kidney disease in brown trout Salmo trutta: further evidence of a myxosporean aetiology

Two groups of brown trout Salmo trutta L. were studied, one after natural exposure to PKD-infected waters, the other after laboratory challenge by intraperitoneal inoculation with PKDinfected kidney tissue from rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri Richardson. Subclinical PKD developed in both groups; renal intraluminal myxosporean organisms were observed in both groups. The implications of these findi...

NON-SALMONID FISH INHABITING A HATCHERY WATER SUP- PLY ENZOOTIC FOR PROLIFERATIVE KIDNEY DISEASE IN- FECTED WITH ONE MYXOSPOREAN, Myxobilatus SP'P

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by an unclassified myxosporean (PKX), is a serious disease of salmonids. Although partial spore development occurs to a limited extent in fish infected with PKX, complete sporalation has not been observed and precise taxonomic status of PKX remains uncertain. The severe inflammation seen in infected fish, unusual for most myxosporean infections, sugges...

Rainbow trout are collateral casualties in the life cycle of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) caused by Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae continues to be a major constraint on the rainbow trout industry in Western Europe and North America. The disease has been estimated to cost the UK trout industry approximately £2.5 million per year and is one of the main research topics in the Aquatic Vaccine Unit. Both short and long-term approaches are being taken to ...

Immune gene expression profiling of Proliferative Kidney Disease in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss reveals a dominance of anti-inflammatory, antibody and T helper cell-like activities

The myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is the causative agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD) targeting primarily the kidney of infected fish where it causes a chronic lymphoid immunopathology. Although known to be associated with suppression of some cellular aspects of innate immunity and a prominent lymphocytic hyperplasia, there remains a considerable knowledge gap in our understan...
